Sunlight
Zone

This is the sunny part of the ocean! Sunlight shines through the water here, helping tiny plants called phytoplankton grow — and feeding almost every creature in the sea.

Did You Know?

Animals here are fast swimmers and great at hiding! Since there's so much light, they use colors and patterns to blend in or scare off other animals.

Light Level 100% – 1%
Avg Temp 20°C – 25°C
Biodiversity Extreme

200m — 1,000m

Twilight
Zone

Down here, the sunlight starts to disappear. It gets darker and darker. Some animals make their own light — like living glow sticks!

Did You Know?

There's almost no sunlight here! Many animals can glow in the dark. Scientists call this bioluminescence (say: bye-oh-loo-min-ESS-ents).

Light Level 1% – 0%
Avg Temp 4°C – 8°C
Biodiversity Moderate

1,000m — 4,000m

Midnight
Zone

It's completely dark here — no sunlight at all! The only light comes from glowing animals. The water pushes on you really, really hard down here.

Did You Know?

Most of the ocean is this dark! Animals here have giant eyes to see tiny flashes of light, or no eyes at all. Some have stretchy stomachs so they can swallow fish bigger than themselves!

Light Level 0% — Total Dark
Avg Temp 1°C – 4°C
Biodiversity Sparse

The Abyss

The water is almost as cold as ice, and it's super dark. Animals down here move very slowly to save energy. It's like the quietest, darkest room you can imagine.

Did You Know?

Food is super rare down here — most animals eat "marine snow," which is tiny bits of dead plants and animals that float down from above like underwater snowflakes! Some wait months between meals.

Light Level 0% — Pitch Black
Avg Temp 0°C – 2°C
Biodiversity Very Low

Hadal
Zone

THE TRENCHES / 6,000–11,000m

The very deepest part of the ocean! It's named after Hades from Greek stories. Only a few super tough animals can live here — and we've barely started finding them.

Did You Know?

If you put Mount Everest at the bottom of the deepest trench, the top would still be underwater! The pressure here is like having 50 jumbo jets stacked on top of you. Only three people have ever visited the deepest spot.

Light Level 0% — Total Dark
Avg Temp 1°C – 4°C
Biodiversity Extremely Low

"We know more about outer space than the bottom of our own ocean." — and that means there are still amazing things waiting to be discovered!
